Bill Wylie

Bill Wylie is one of those legendary characters that, unlike today’s celebrity culture icons, is not a familiar name and face for nearly everybody, but rather is a well known and long remembered presence for a smaller but much more intensely interested group of afficianados and desperados, adherents to good words and good music that smells of the earth and whistles in the winds. Of time and place, birth and growing this writer cannot say much about Bill, except to know that he rubbed shoulders with the likes of Spider John Koerner of Minnesota and Pete Seeger, another lover of the banjo from “back East” as they say. He came our way via a poet, and a storyteller he is with hands and arms and body swaying and face crinkling up with the flashing of eyes, and then in the middle of a story the banjo tinkles and rattles a bit, and with a thump thump of rhythm he is singing. If at times the stage manager stands close by with the sheep hook, nevertheless, with an evening of Bill Wylie one knows that he has been entertained, and maybe educated a bit.

November Brick & Mortar Show

Join us for another great Brick & Mortar show featuring songwriters Jim Faddis of Prairie Flyer and Adam Kogler of Spokane’s Revolving Music Project. (bios below)

Thursday, November 4th 7 to 9 pm
Coffee Social 113 W. Indiana
***free***

Jim Faddis:  Light years ago, Jim learned music from his mom, who played fiddle, taught him about hard work in the California cotton fields, and made sure he knew that music is the one thing a person can’t get along without. He’s been playing guitar and singing ever since. Jim sings lead vocals in the band with a soulful and honest voice that people say they could listen to all day. Now a songwriter as well as a singer, he was a finalist in both 2003 and 2004 at the Sisters Folk Festival Songwriting Contest. And when we’re lucky… he plays the harmonica, too.

Adam Kogler:  Originally from Seattle, Adam Kogler has been a singer/songwriter for the past 9 years. He moved to Spokane in 2007. He has a wonderful family, with two boys and one more on the way.

Adam’s music tries to combine fun Jack Johnson-esque guitar rhythm with catchy melodies and thought provoking lyrics. Adam believes that music should stand for something, to express an idea. Adam tries to write lyrics that work on 3 levels: personal, social and spiritual. He tries to balance out positive messages with the realities of the social injustices in this world. In the end Adam thinks that music should bring community together.

To help bring local musicians together, Adam started the Revolving Musician Project, which was series of shows in which different song writers played short, overlapping sets encouraging collaboration. Although there won’t be any more shows this year, the RMP will return in 2011. So keep a look out!
